What is your name?

Yes Lioness

Who are your favorite artists?
Some of my favorites are Elizabeth Catlett, Leo & Diane Dillon, Jacob Lawrence, Jean Michel Basquiat, Gustav Klimt.

What is their preferred medium and subject? Why?

I prefer acrylics & watercolors because they dry fast. As an illustrator and painter who has

only a small amount of time to devote to painting, fast allows me to finish in one sitting and move on to something else.
What inspired your works?
I'm inspired by Color, Design, Culture, photography and life experiences.

Which of your artwork pieces is your favorite?

I don't have a favorite...I have yet to create one that I love more than the others.

Is there an artist you relate to?

Elizabeth Catlett and Margaret Burroughs. I love drawing the human form...portraits especially. Their artwork has a lot of that and it's not only beautiful but strong. It conveys the emotions we all feel.

What would you call your style?

I'm not crazy about labels. A description might include Afro-centric, urban Art. What's the best thing about being an artist?
The ability to tune into myself and create something based on my soul.

What's the worst thing about being an artist?
Being sensitive & easily misunderstood.

Is there a purpose to your artwork?
My purpose in creating art is to express what I think & feel and share it with others who hopefully can create and be inspired by.

How do you feel when people interpret your artwork differently?
I don't have a strict interpretation for my art so people are free to see it however they like.

What advice do you have for aspiring artists?
My advice would be to read, travel and meditate on what is really important to say. After that...produce as much art as you possibly can!

I would pick the color green cause it a very cool and relax color to me. my scrapbook room is marine green which it relax, cool, and calm when you enter the room which why i stay in it so much.

Three things i want badly hmm well a plasma tv for my craft room, a new printer , and another laptop.

i would have to say i'm a quickie i like to pull things out of my baskets and organizers and just put things to work--i do alot of recycling also by using name brand tags, water bottle labels, etc.

What is your favorite way to relax?
i love to get up before my house wakes up, sit on the couch and look out the window and meditate--i do alot praying for myself, my family, friends and for anyone who needs it--i believe when i pray my soul just opens up and the true me flows all over the place--I know that God is my comforter--He is a deliverer and a conqueror--i'm a giver not by fault but placed upon me by God-- so yeah, prayer relaxes me--watch out now! a prayer is coming your way! :)

yellow--because i'm bright, bubbly and loveable {teeheeheeee}

"Don't Bet On The Horses!" Seriously, tho...a tip? Try and create at least one thing each day...whether it's a card, a journaling page, a blog post, a new recipe, or just a quick yet interesting thought! Don't use the "I don't have time" excuse! It really depends on my mood and the project. Lately I have been tinkering more with colored pencils and water colored pencils. I'm also getting into Art Journaling more and just starting to get into Gesso and Acrylic Paints. But over the past few years I have been consistently involved with Digi Stamps. And I can't resist various kinds of BLING.

I rarely pre-plan anything unless I am working from a sketch for a DT I am on. I usually stand and create as I am running back and forth most of the time trying to located various items to use in my projects while working on them.

What is your name?
Shannon Renee Elston

Do you have a website/blog? http://creatively-soulful.blogspot.com. I don’t blog as often as I’d like though but I plan on starting!

WHO is your favorite artist. Hands down my favorite artist is a friend of mine, SKY. Her work is phenomenal.

What is their preferred medium and subject? Why?

My preferred medium is charcoal and pastel. I find it the easiest to work in right now. Its easy to blend and shade. Eventually I want to venture into painting but for now, charcoal and pastel it is. My favorite subject is women. I love drawing women with big natural hair. I love trying to have my art show emotion. Why? Mainly because I think women are such beautiful expressive creatures! We are ALWAYS feeling something! lol

What inspired your works? I was once in a not so positive relationship, where my beauty was often called into question. I struggled with self confidence while I tried to still convince myself that I was beautiful inside out. Once I left that behind I made some serious changes. I decided to go natural so that I could completely appreciate and understand my beauty. My art reflects that. I love drawing women natural and beautiful.

Which of your artwork pieces is your favorite? My favorite is an unnamed piece. I saw a picture and just picked up my pencil and began to sketch. I think it’s my favorite because it’s not the style I normally draw in. I don’t normally just sketch. Its easy to just do what is the norm for yourself, but I want to challenge myself and step outside of my norm

Is there an artist you relate to? I relate to any artist who evokes emotion through their work.

What would you call your style? I would call it my own little version of Expressionism.

What's the best thing about being an artist? The best thing for me would be having an outlet!

What's the worst thing about being an artist? The worse thing about being an artist, well for me is when people devalue your art. They might so oooh I love that but its not worth whatever dollar amount I put on it. Like Ms. Badu so eloquently stated, “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive ‘bout my s*^%!” it’s true.

Is thee a purpose to your artwork? Yes, its to celebrate the beauty in women. All too often we become consumed with this idea of what is beautiful. We all are. We just need to recognize it.

How do you feel when people interpret your artwork differently? I like hearing interpretations other than my own!

What advice do you have for aspiring artists? I would say be true to your work. Don’t compromise your art based on what others may think. It’s about expressing you!

I LOVE SNOW!!!![the color of it, the smell of it, the feel of it, the taste of it [gotta make sure there's no yellow in it] not enuff of it here in ohio

I LOVE MY FOLLOWERS AND FRIENDS [yes YOU!!!] tell your friends about me so they can follow me and i can follow them! plus they get to know the crazee, funkee side of me--plus they get to see my creationz
i sleep an average of 3-4 hours every night--i get up at 4am and come home from work about 5pm then close my eyes and take a quick nap [15 minutes] just to energize myself--i wake up about 4 times during the night--may have to go to a sleep center soon--pray for me please--

Once I get started it moves kind of fast. I usually know which pictures I will be working with, and in my head I have already decided which papers and embellishments will work.

Enjoy your life to the fullest, because you never know when it will be gone. I never want to be that person who is always saying, "I wish I had done this or that".

What is your favoirte way to relax?
With a good mystery and a glass of wine.

If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?
When I was younger, I used to be shy and wouldn't talk to people unless they talked to me first. But as I got older and became involved in more activities where you had to speak up, I became outspoken and wanted to be seen and heard. Purple/red are my all time favorite colors. They are fun and sassy and there is no way you miss the woman wearing purple or red.

Tell us three things you want very badly at the moment.
To spend some time with my granddaughters who live in Chicago.
To have enough money to buy the new canon camera that I have been saving for.
To be able to get a new car now instead of waiting for 2 years, which is the plan.

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
Honest, loyal, and Diva-licious (a friend called me this recently, they said it meant that I spoke my mind without hurting anyone's feelings in the process. I knew just what I wanted out of life and tried to get it. And that I was very comfortable in my own skin, that I understood who I was and that I was happy with that) go figure.

What's your favorite thing that you've designed?
The first scrapbook that I made, it was for my daughter when she graduated from nursing school in 2005. I was so proud of her, she worked a full time job, was raising 2 daughters and my son's oldest daughter all while going to school full time. I wanted to do something special for her and I came up with this idea while talking to some ladies at work who scrapbooked. this book covered her life from birth to the graduation. 34 years, I did not think I would ever finish. She still tells me there are some gaps. so I just keep adding pages when we find photos to fit the gaps. (She cried when I game it her, thats when I knew I had done a good job.) What's your favorite line? I can't think of a favorite line... so I would have to say that I don't have one.

What camera do you use?
A Samsung SL30- this is my second samsung, but I can't wait until I get my new canon.

Is there something you love to snack on while designing?
Chocolate DOVE chocolate - I try not to eat to much of it.

What's your favoirte Ink. Momento I use the black and brown all the time for stamping and I wanted to get some of the other colors that they make. But to buy the regular size pads was way to expensive. I have to stay within my budget for my hobbies. (I found this set of 16 colors of momento ink and it was a reasonable price and it has all of the colors of the rainbow and more. It is fast drying and I can use my Copics right away, plus I was able to use a 40% coupon on the purchase)

What are your favorite tools/techniques/products?
Cuttlebug embossing folders/Cuttlebug machine... I love taking a plain piece of paper and embossing it with some design. Spellbinders Nestibilities I love all the different shapes--you get anywhere from 4 to 6 different sizes of a particular shape. They are better than punches as far as I am concerned.

How do you set the vibez before creating? Do you gather everything to the table or do you walk back and forth as you go? Do you snack as you go?

If I am scrapbooking, I pull out my photos and try to remember what was going on when they were taken. What was I feeling? Was I having a good time?
If I am making cards, I think about what the occasion is, who is it for. I enter a lot of challenges, so I have to think about what the challenge is about. The way my my room is set up, when I sit at my crafting desk everything is within reach. So I don't have to walk back and forth.
Because I have a weight issue and I'm trying to eat healthier, I try not to snack all the time. And If I have to snack, I try to make it healthier than the chocolate that I love.

If I'm in my studio, I'll gather pictures and papers first and then just grab stuff as I need it...the table usually has a mountain of stuff that stays on it so I just grab & use. For a crop, I create & pack kits for easy creating.

I found since being on Tellen's Place Designs DT that it's easiest for me to print out at least 6 digi images on a sheet, and while spending time watching TV with my family I'll color in the images and cut them out. This way I'll always have digi images available for my DT assignments.

What is your favorite way to relax?

I love to relax with my husband and daughter. We usually have a weekly movie night on Friday or Saturday night where we watch a "G" rated movie together ;D

If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?

It would be brown. I am a Taurus which is an Earth sign and earthiness I am. I love wearing and scrapping in all shades of brown!

Tell us three things you want very badly at the moment

1. To be on my 50th birthday cruise

2. To weigh 30 lbs less

3. To be retired!!!

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?

Quiet, funny, reliable

What's your favorite thing that you've designed?

My first (and last) tissue box cover that I never made a template of and which I made for a fellow worker. I get to see it every time I pass her desk.

I love Webster's Papers, American Crafts, Pink Paisley, etc.

What camera do you use?

I love my Nikon D60. I really need to take some classes to get the most use out of it.

Is there something you love to snack on while designing?

I will usually snack on my daughter's Temple's cereal. I'll pour some in a bowl and bring it with me into my Crafts Room. It's easy to snack on and it won't make a mess while I'm crafting.

I really like Tattered Angels glimmer mists and Tsukineko inks.

Everywhere...from fabric to nature, from people to colors. I have never picked up a scrapbook magazine, but life inspires me.

Oh boy this is hard, I love all colors, I gravitate to browns and blues, BUT I scrap every colors, a wide range

Really? My Fiskars Pink Skull Scissors, you might think my trimmer or other tools like my BIG BITE but no the scissors I always reach for them. Thanks Rebecca (who gave them to me)

Are you a slow scrapper or a quick scrapper?

I have no patience or time because I have 3 kids, so each page is fast! If it takes more than 40 minutes, I am at a loss...it frustrates me.

What's your favorite quote?

Carpe Diem (total cheeseball I know) but really it is my life Seize The Day because you only live once.

Give us your favorite tip

Relax and go with the flow, who cares if something is a little bit crooked or it rips, just cover it and move on, share your ideas be kind you will always find a new idea, it makes people feel great to learn new things. It's a hobby have fun with it, people will appreciate the thought, if they don't, well they suck LOL

What is your favorite way to relax?

Delve into a good horror book or movie by myself in my house with no kids around!! That;s the realistic one, the dream one is on the beach in Hawaii with nothing but waves and turtles!

If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?

You know those melted crayons you make with twisted colors? Those...all of them twisted and colorful because I am and always will be just this far off normal and a little twisted but bright and fun!

Tell us three things you want very badly at the moment

Ohhhhh boy....Honestly? ***shhh*** these are secrets...you said "want" right? LOL so they are pipe dreams To be a Fiskateer Lead Have a PINK JEEP Have a huge free arm quilting machine

What's your favorite thing that you've designed?

Recently would be the rolling pin kitchen sign, but also I sew every single day, usually every week I fall in love with a new dress I make LOL

What's your favorite line?

Honestly I do not have one, there are so many great lines I love the Cosmo Cricket lines, if I could use anything i wanted it would be the Farm Fresh line or some of the October Afternoon lines

What camera do you use?

I use a Nikon P80 and I know people make fun of me the ones who have the fancy cameras , but I could afford the P80 and until I can get something better it works for me :)

Is there something you love to snack on while designing?

Generally I don't

What’s your favorite Ink?

STAZON for glass and acrylic and CLEARSNAP Colorbox for everything else!

what are your favorite tools/techniques/products?

Love love my Cropadile Big Bite, Love my Janome Sewing machine, Love my Ultra Express Shape Cutter. Love folding paper into ruffles, making hand made flowers and using fabric on layouts.

how do you set the vibez before creating? Do you gather everything to the table or do you walk back and forth as you go and do you snack as you go??

I just set at my craft table and do it, no rhyme or reason, no snacks usually just TV and stopping to help the kids and cook dinner LOL

I usually scrap mini albums - 4 x6 - 6 x6's.

Is your scrap area messy or neat?

Typically my scrap area is neat but if I am working on a mini, it's a jumble of pieces of a puzzle to put together.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Inspiration is usually a natural part of my day-to-day scrapping but often, as I browse other blogs, other artists often inspire me in some form or another.

What's your favorite scrapbooking colors?

Blue is my favorite color but I light up for pinks and greens.

What's your most-used scrapbook tool?

I would have to say adhesive is my most used scrapbook tool because no matter what I seem to make, I always need (and run out of) glue.

Are you a slow scrapper or a quick scrapper?

I am a slow scrapper as I need time to formulate and craft my design fully.

What's your favorite quote?

"If at first you don't succeed, try, try again."

Give us your favorite tip

A favorite tip I have is about Scraps - we all have zillions and it's hard to make something out of the smallest parts; so use your punches. Don't wait until you have a pile - punch while you're waiting for ink to dry, glue to dry, glitter to dry - you'd be surprised how many butterflies, flowers, hearts, stars, etc. you've accumulated and is ready for use just from idle punching. Don't wait to punch - use those scraps! ;p

What is your favorite way to relax?

My favorite way to relax is to sit in my husband's favorite chair, recline and read a good mystery novel (Agatha Christie is my favorite).

If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?

If I were a crayon, I'd be blue because it is a tranquil color and relaxes everyone upon sight. Look up at the sky on a clear beautiful day - isn't that the most beautiful blue you've ever seen - -perfect and serene.

Tell us three things you want very badly at the moment

I would very much like reconciliation with my twin sons. I would very much like to see my grandsons more often. I would very much like to see my family keep sight of each other.

What are three words you would use to describe yourself? 

Three words that I would use to describe myself are: strong, loving and resilient.

What's your favorite thing that you've designed?

My favorite project that I've designed is a Memory Keeper, something a friend, Sandy (Details by Sandy blog) had made from a tutorial by Marion Smith. Upon sight, I knew I had to make one. Sandy even provided an extra resource for the roses I put on top. To me, it is one of my best pieces of work.

What's your favorite line?

My favorite line...of paper? I am in love with K & Company designer paper, as I rarely ever find a sheet within the pack that I dislike.

What camera do you use?

I use a Kodak EasyShare Z1485 IS camera.

Is there something you love to snack on while designing?

I can't snack and design at the same time (thank God). When I get hungry, I usually eat away from the table. I only have room for paper projects at this table. :P

What’s your favorite Ink?

My favorite ink would be Versa Magic. They come in these small dew drop shaped containers with soft sponges that you can ink distress easily without having to use daubers or sponge tip applicators. It's perfect.

what are your favorite tools/techniques/products?

My favorite products would have to be Martha Stewart - especially her punches. Her die-cuts, papers, adhesive, etc. are much like her household products; perfectly designed with "you" in mind.

how do you set the vibez before creating? Do you gather everything to the table or do you walk back and forth as you go and do you snack as you go??

Sometimes, the vibez are up and running at 5am and I can make so many wonderful things from gift box sets, pizza boxes, baskets, etc. I usually gather everything to the table (if it is not on or right by it already) and when I'm ready to go, I go. Once in awhile, my mojo gets stuck and I have to step away and give my brain a "fun" rest (play a word game or do a puzzle like Jewel Quest). Then I do some blog browsing and WHAM...I'm back on the track, creating.

Right now it’s actually clean. I have been trying to make a better effort to keep it clean before and after the creative process. It gets tough when my girls are always coming in and pulling things off my desk and dropping their toys in the room.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Everywhere, others scrappers, TV, billboards, my family, HGTV, everywhere!!

What's your favorite scrapbooking colors?
Well, I really am in love with color so I don’t really have a favorite set of scrappy colors. I love to use whatever inspires me. I love it all but if I had to decided on one color or a set. It would have to be green and pink!!!! LOL I am a girly girl!!!!

What's your most-used scrapbook tool?

My scissors! I hand cut most of my embellishments on every layout. It takes a lot of time but I love to do it.

Are you a slow scrapper or a quick scrapper?

I am soooooo slow, lol. I love the creative process so I take my sweet time. It takes me about 3-4 hours each layout. Sometimes I ask my husband what he thinks about a particular layout, he gives his opinion. Then when he sees the layout again he gets upset because the layout is totally different than the one he saw initially, LOL!

What's your favorite quote?

Art is the imitation of life. Especially in our scrappy world. We designers have a way of seeing something that inspire us and turn it into art.

Give us your favorite tip:
Wow, I am a technique junkie so this one is hard to narrow down to just one. Well, I guess stamping. I love to stamp on everything. Stamping on flowers, creating a unique background, or embellishment.

What is your favorite way to relax?

Scrapping, or eating and watching American Idol.

If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why?

Red, I love how bright, and passionate the color is.

My favorite product is hands down Shimmerz. They are easy to use, easy to clean up, and very very versatile. I adore each and every line available. My favorite tool is my scissors, the big shot would be a close second. And technique is stamping.

I decide on what I want to work on as far as photos/papers. Then I kind of make myself kits. I take out different products that I want to try with what I’m working with and go from there. So guess I set the vibez!!! Shimmerz Vibez that is (wink wink)

What size do you scrapbook? 8.5x11...or 6x12...or 8x8...it depends on what day of the week it is!!

Is your scrap area messy or neat? I could show you...but then I'd have to kill you! NO ONE should ever see my studio and live to tell about it!

What’s your favorite Ink? Coffee! Naw, that's not a mistake! I like the taste of coffee but not as much as tea. So, when I make a big pot of it and don't drink it in two days I use the rest to stamp on my projects!

Where do you find your inspiration? Billboards...the grocery store...commercials...ANYWHERE!!! My main problem with staying organized is corralling all of those bits of paper I've scribbled on when I see something that moves me to kreate!

What's your favorite scrapbooking color? I love brown, orange and teal together...YUUUMMMY!!!

What's your most-used scrapbook tool? A needle and thread...you can find hand stitching on about 95% of my pages!

There are SO many talented artists out there that it's easy to get caught up in thinking, "DANG, I wish I could do (insert technique) like (insert artist's name you're drooling over!) I've had days when I want to kreate but instead I'm getting caught up on the computer, tripping because I can't distress like this person or can't do digi like another. But, I have to push back and say to myself, "You know what: God gives all of us different talents. As much as I want to be good at EVERYTHANG, it's not possible. So, I just have to do me and keep on admiring the way others do them!" That always makes ME feel better!

What is your favorite way to relax?    I have to have my tea with milk and sugar, preferably in a hot bath with lots of bubbles and a good book!

If you were a crayon, what color would you be and why? I would be red! It's my favorite color because it's so bright and vibrant...and sassy!

Tell us three things you want very badly at the moment: I NEED a lens for my camera...I don't have one at all! I want my house to be completely organized. I love seeing magazines and TV shows where others have done a fantabulous job of taming their junk and I work constantly towards that. Then, once the junk is erradicated...IMMA WANT A VACATION!!!!

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?  Sensitive...loving...kreative!!!!

What do you think your fans would be surprised to know? That I'm unsure at times, too. I worry about elements not being right; I worry that people won't understand where I'm coming from or like what I've kreated...and then I GET OVER IT!!!!

The etsy shop is full of handmade, unique YUMMINESS!!! Right now, it mostly features handmade titles but I have plans to include cards, posters, mini albums...etc...very soon! Artists also have the option of having a custom title made!

How did you get started with scrapbooking?
I consider myself an old-timer in the scrapbooking world. I was the editor of my high school paper & layouts were my specialty. So when my daughter came along it seem like the perfect fit.

I am inspired by lots & lots of people.

First off I crank up the iTunes & start my music. Music is always playing. I am more of a grab here & there girl…walking back & forth. I snack here & there. I almost always have a chai tea on the table!

BOTH…sometimes it comes so quickly and sometimes it takes time to build. I guess it depends on my mood.

Here & there. I find it an easy way to create & try new things without feeling pressured.

geez talk about pressure…. Ummm I love using lace papers (like KI Lace, Doodlebug, & CI papers) & household items as masks… things that you already have on hand.

what encouraging and inspiring words can you leave for people who want to begin scrapbooking or who want to begin art journaling?
create from the heart, create what YOU want to create without worrying about what others might want, create without fear, and never forget to play & have fun with it.
